In August Kaitlyn had an appointment with our audiologist. She goes every 3 months to keep tabs on her "good" ear and make sure she hasn't lost any hearing. I used to worry constantly about her losing more hearing, but quit worrying about a year ago because she had stayed so steady for so long. I also quit worrying because there was really nothing I could do about it.
Kaitlyn's most recent test showed a moderate hearing loss in her good ear, the ear that has always tested normal. There is a chance that her ear tubes are contributing to this loss, but the audiologist is sure that there is definitely some new loss. I was a little surprised, but not devastated, as I've always known that this was such a real possibility. I had Kaitlyn fitted for a hearing aid that day and we got it a few weeks later. Kaitlyn's right ear now tests at a profound loss so she hears absolutely nothing out of that ear (at least we think that is the case--little kids and hearing loss are very tricky). We don't aid that ear.
Kaitlyn has done sooo well with her hearing aid. We call it her Magic Ear and she loves it! It took a little getting used to, but within a few days she was asking me to put it in each morning. She rarely messes with it and doesn't always want to take it out at night. She knows that it helps.
Statistically, Kaitlyn's hearing will probably continue to get progressively worse. Only time will tell. For now, she's doing really well and we are very grateful for the technology we have that allows her to hear so well!
