Miss Kinsey started kindergarten this year. She turned 6 soon after school started, so she is one of the oldest kids in her class. She is loving school! We had a very interesting first day of school. We had our school all picked out, did all the school tours, kindergarten orientations, parents night, etc. Kinsey knew where she was going and was very excited. However, the day before she was set to start, I got a phone call from the administrator of a charter school I had applied to in the spring. The school had an opening in their kindergarten class and they had redrawn from their lottery and drew Kinsey's name. They gave me 1 hour to decide if we wanted to spot and told me that she would start the next day.
Um, seriously? What a decision to make. 1 hour was not long enough! After talking it over with friends, Jason, and my parents, we decided to take the spot. My dad pointed out that we could always back out, but we needed to take the spot before we lost it.
I had a really hard time deciding what to do for a few reasons. The first was that we were so ready for the other school. Kinsey was ready. She did NOT want to switch to the charter school. We had a bus plan figured out and I had met the teachers. We had the best track. I knew that we would never be able to get back into that particular school on that particular track. I hated to lose our spot there. Plus the charter school had already started so Kinsey would be the new kid on her first day of school!
But the charter school had some great things about it too. The school requires that you have a certain amount of outside instruction, in sports, music, art, whatever (you get to choose) and has a shortened day to compensate for this. The school runs from 8:30-1:30. For kindergarten, they only require 1 hour of outside activity each week which is what we already do with gymnastics. The classes are very small, just 16 kids and only one class per grade. The school goes through 8th grade and I liked the idea of her pretty much avoiding the big scary middle school experience. It's also a very good school that provides kids with an excellent education and avoids many of the rules and politics that you find in regular public schools (a charter school is a private school that is publicly funded).
So we took the spot. I worried about it all day and tried to convince Kinsey to give it a try. I developed an eye twitch and didn't get any sleep that night. We got up the next day and Kinsey and I headed out. We got to the school and found her classroom. Poor Kinsey would NOT let go of my hand. She didn't cry, but she was close. We met her teacher and found her seat. A sweet little girl that sat near her handed her a crayon and just like that, Kinsey was fine. She told me I could go and settled right in. Let's not talk about how well I settled in... It was such a crazy way to start kindergarten!
I picked Kinsey up and she informed me that she had had a great day and didn't ever want to go to her other school. I found out later that she had gotten in trouble for talking on her first day.
I'm glad we took the spot. We love the schedule and the small class. The other parents are wonderful and we get together often after school. The kids Kinsey is with now will be with her through 8th grade and we totally lucked out with nice kids and awesome parents. Kinsey comes home happy everyday and loves her little school life.
