The Care Project and Bald Head Island

A few months ago I heard about an organization called The Care Project.  The Care Project was started by an audiologist with the intent of bringing together families of children with hearing loss.  The main objective is to host a (completely paid for) retreat for 11 families on Bald Head Island each November.  Jason and I applied this year and we were chosen to be one of the families.  We had SUCH an amazing trip and are so grateful that we we able to go.  We met such wonderful people and learned so much to help us help Kaitlyn as she grows.

You have to take a ferry to get to Bald Head Island, and we boarded the 7pm ferry.  It was already dark when we got on the boat, which was kind of a weird experience, but Jason took the girls outside and they saw shooting stars.  I'm bummed I missed it!  I was inside watching our bags.  There are no cars allowed on the island, only golf carts, so we took a tram (it was sort of like a golf cart train) to our little home for the weekend.  If riding the ferry in the dark was weird, the tram was crazy.  They driver went SO fast and we had no idea where we were going.  We couldn't see a thing, other than the trees next to us flying by.  We made it to our destination though, and put the girls in bed and got ready for the next day.

Each morning the girls went to a beach house with all the other kids for child care while we went to parent sessions.  We had presentations from audiologists, hearing aid reps, doctors, etc.  We learned so much and enjoyed getting to know the other parents.  The girls had a great time too!  They split the groups up by age and the older kids got to go to some activities while the younger kids played with the child care volunteers (mostly audiology students from UNC).  Kinsey was in the older group and got to go on a lighthouse tour, a pirate adventure, and down to the beach to learn about the tide pools.

We had our afternoons free and the first day we went to the beach on the sound side and then to the lighthouse on the island, Old Baldy.  We had fun driving around in our little golf cart!  It was so easy to load the girls up because we didn't have to worry about carseats!  On our second day we filmed an interview talking about Kaitlyn's "story" and then spent the rest of the time at the beach.

One evening we had a little beach party with our group.  On this particular island you can watch the sun set from the beach.  That doesn't happen too often on the east coast!

Our last night we had a nice dinner and the kids sang some songs.  It wasn't lost on me how amazing it was to see this big group of kids, about a third of whom have some level of hearing loss, singing and doing the actions for the songs.  We are so grateful for the technology that allows all these kiddos a chance at a successful and happy life.

My favorite part of the trip was one day when Kaitlyn noticed another boy's hearing aid.  She looked and looked at him and then said, "You have red!  I have purple!" (referring to the color of his hearing aid).  She was so excited to see that other kids had "magic ears" as well.  "I have 1 magic ear, you have 2!"  Kaitlyn's young enough that I didn't realize that she would notice this, but she did, and I think she thought it was cool.  This weekend helped to normalize our lives and we made some amazing friends.  I'm so glad we could go!
