Our Adventure with Hurricane Irene

A couple of weeks ago, we started hearing warnings about Hurricane Irene. For awhile, there was a chance that Raleigh was going to get hit very hard. As the storm got closer, we were pretty sure that we were going to miss the worst of it, but we were still supposed to get strong winds and some rain. It was a weird feeling to just sit and wait for the storm to arrive. The clouds were CRAZY. The day of the storm, they were circling our house. I've never seen anything like it.

We knew that there was a chance that we would lose power, a few years ago a hurricane hit Raleigh and people were without power for about 2 weeks. We stocked up on food, revamped our 72 hour kits, and made sure we had plenty of batteries for our flashlights.

We ended up doing fine through the storm, parts of Raleigh lost power but our lights only flickered a few times. There was quite a bit of wind, but we've had much worse storms in the past that had nothing to do with a hurricane.

There were lots of leaves and branches on the ground and part of our fence got damaged, but that is pretty much it.

Jason's birthday was the day after the storm and we were thankfully able to do most of our planned celebrations, including the cupcakes that I was afraid I would be unable to make (if we lost power).

All in all, it was a pretty exciting weekend. We are grateful that we were so minimally affected. We had an earthquake a few days before the storm and tornado's a few days after. We're hoping that Mother Nature gives us a break for awhile!

Beautiful sunset after the storm
