OBX Fall 2011

In October we went to the Outer Banks for a long weekend. It was awesome. We've been every fall since we moved here, except for the one right after Kaitlyn was born (we did make it for New Year's that year though). This is the latest in the season we've ever been (weekend before Halloween) and it was a little colder than we would have liked, but still warm enough to play on the beach (at least the first day was). We had so much fun with our awesome beach going friends, the Prieto's and the Thayne's. Hopefully we'll make it back next fall as well!

I think it took me so long to write a blog about this weekend because I have sooooo many pictures and wasn't sure how to narrow them down. As you can see, I didn't do a very good job :)

We left in the evening and stopped for some Carolina BBQ and greasy hush puppies for dinner. It was midnight before we got there and Kinsey was still awake. Kaitlyn woke up right when we got there and was ready to play! We finally got them settled down, only to get up bright and early the next morning (WHY can't kids sleep in?). I was sharing a bed with Kinsey and she coughed on me and kicked me all night. The next morning someone asked me how I slept and I said, "Not great. Someone was kicking me all night long." Under her breath, Kinsey said, "Yeah, well someone was pushing ME all night long..."

On our way!

We spent the morning on the beach. It wasn't quite warm enough for bathing suits, but the girls insisted on them...

Pure JOY

We love having friends to play with at the beach!

We spent the rest of the day shopping (the girls), sleeping and playing (the kids), and playing computer games (the boys).

The girls attempting to share...

We spent an hour at the beach the next morning, but it was WINDY and not very fun.

Jason and I decided to drive down the coast and see the after effects of Hurricane Irene. It was CRAZY.

The KOA we talked about staying at...

Still OPEN!!

Part of the road leading to Hatteras Island had washed away during the hurricane. The state recently put in a "temporary bridge" (temporary meaning that it will be there for a few years) and it had opened just a few days before we went down. The island had been completely closed off. We were so happy to see things being rebuilt and many shops still open.

We had a yummy lunch at Nino's pizza

And then went to Uncle Eddy's for ice cream. We love this place!

Here are some pictures of where the road washed away. It was so weird. The entire length of the bridge used to be land. Now there is a new inlet.

You can see where the road just drops off...

The crazy bridge

We walked along the beach, right by the new inlet. It was beautiful! We really love the Outer Banks.

Another (big) bridge that spans another inlet, caused by a hurricane years ago.

We made it back in time for a wonderful dinner. The next morning we went to church, came back for lunch, and spent some time in the hammock! Kinsey did NOT want to leave the beach house.

We recently bought a touchpad, and Jason rigged it up to act as a portable DVD player. It makes traveling much nicer!

We made one last stop at this awesome pier before we left for home. The girls chased the birds and the waves.

We can't wait to go back!
