After lunch and visiting the lighthouse, we (just our family) decided to stop at the beach for a little while. We noticed a place where we could drive directly onto the beach. We've always wanted to do this, and we have a Subaru so we decided to go for it. We made one seemingly tiny mistake--we didn't let the air out of our tires. We only had to drive through loose sand for a little while and thought it would be fine. It wasn't fine. We had just gotten to the beach when the engine started to smoke. Jason quickly turned off the car and we decided to let it cool down before we did anything else--we also took some air out of the tires. The beach was beautiful, so we played for awhile and watched some fisherman. After about 40 minutes, we tried again. We were able to get out of the sand with no problems, thankfully!
Randomly, this turned out to be a blessing. Our car is a manual, and has always "shuddered" when we shift from one gear to another. Jason said something about the clutch plate being warped? I don't really know anything cars... Anyways, since this whole event the car hasn't shuddered once. Who knows why, but we'll take it. Pretty cool, but probably not the recommended way to fix your car!
