Day 5-Jason went fishing with his dad, I spent the day at Jason's house. Kinsey and Avery played on a teeter-totter and Kinsey had so much fun! Of course I didn't take any pictures though...
Day 6-Jason and I went out to go 4-wheeling, Kinsey stayed with her Grandma Hill. It started out as a really fun trip. We enjoyed the wide open sky, the sagebrush, and of course all the oil field equipment.

We had to be to my mom's for dinner so we were going to ride down the wash really quickly. I wanted this picture...

I'd forgotten what the dessert looks like. And apparently not everyone knows what a wash is. Another word for it is an arroyo. Basically, it is a sandy area that sometimes has water, sometimes it doesn't. It just depends on how much rain the area has gotten recently. I suppose it would be a river or a lake if it was somewhere were it rained more, like say, North Carolina. Google gave me this definition: "In hydrologic terms, a water-carved channel or gully in arid country, usually rather small with steep banks, dry most of the time, due to infrequent rainfall and the shallowness of the cut which does not penetrate below the level of permanent ground water." There, some of you may have learned something new today!
After we got the picture we rode for a little bit longer. Long story short, we got stuck. Really, really stuck. We pushed and pulled and finally got to a point where Jason could drive the 4-wheeler forward--just to get stuck again. Stuck worse than the first time. Again we tried to get the 4-wheeler out but couldn't do it with just to two of us. We ended up calling Jason's dad who came and rescued us using a different 4-wheeler. We were covered with dirt, hot, thirsty, hungry and tired, but we still had to laugh. Did I mention that the last time we took the 4-wheeler out we got stuck too??? Maybe we should just stick to paved roads and cars.
When we first go stuck and it was still funny

Stuck, the first time

My feet after nearly losing my Chaco's to the quicksand-like mud

Getting stuck a second time

We found a friend

See how stuck we were! Not as fun anymore...

Right after the rescue-
so nice to be free again

The aftermath of the 4-wheeler

It was me. I was driving. For our non desert dwelling friends- it may seem really stupid to drive on quicksand... but a large wash such as this can be very fun. The sand is often smooth and fast. The wash changes over time depending on precipitation levels. Judging by the narrow stream and high banks where the stream had cut the bed of the wash, rain had been scarce for some time. Or maybe there hadn't been any flash floods for awhile, where the rain comes too fast for the thirsty desert sand to absorb. We had to cross the water, so I was driving down the stream to find a shorter bank to climb, trying to remember whether we got stuck in the water or the muck to the side last time. I had just remembered when, well...
OMGOsh Kimmie and Jason! That is soo funny. Kimmie I would have been devastated if you had lost your Chacos! Also I love the picture of the stuck 4 wheeler and you can see you in the background all sad. Reminds me of our trip to the Grand Canyon when it hailed. LOL
Lisa and I had a similar experiance. We were in Bloomfield visiting my Mom and got my father-in-law's pickup stuck in a wash.
