Caverns, waterfalls, BBQ, and the Hunger Games

After leaving Jellystone Park, we decided to make the short drive to Linville Caverns.  I've always liked caverns and we haven't been to one in awhile.  The last time we went Kinsey was a baby so it was a new experience for both girls.  I was a little worried about Kaitlyn darting off into a dark corner of the cave and never being heard from again, but she was really good and the tour was pretty short.

Just some pictures from the cave.  I'm putting them in just to prove we went.

After the caverns we drove a bit more and started the hike up to Linville Falls.  We made it the falls and then Jason wanted to walk further to get a better view of the whole thing.  I told him the girls wouldn't make it but he was optimistic so we fordged on.  Sure enough, Kaitlyn needed a ride for a good part of the walk back to the car, but Kinsey was a trooper and walked the whole thing herself.  Good thing because she's too big for us to carry very far anymore!  I was really impressed with both girls!  We need to hike more often.

Kaitlyn was freaking me out. The water was SO fast.  I don't know why the wall was the perfect height for a 3 year old to climb on and jump off.  I've never been scared of heights but I turn into a crazy person when my girls get near the edge.

At the top!

After the hike we sat down at a picnic table and I made Kinsey finish her homework.  Somehow it hadn't gotten done and she had to go back to school the next day.  Her school is very serious about homework (in kindergarten!) and I knew we had some twisty roads ahead so we just got it done (I may or may not have helped a little or a lot).

We drove down the Blue RIdge Parkway for a bit!  It was our first time and it was beautiful.  We really want to go back in the fall.

 Kinsey took this picture.

At the camp we had asked for some BBQ recommendations for our trip home.  We wanted to give western North Carolina BBQ a try and we were excited to try Hursey's BBQ.  We were so disappointing to find it closed (we got there on a Tuesday).  We ended up at another BBQ place that wasn't very good.

Happened to drive by the NC School for the Deaf.  It was beautiful but I am glad I don't have to send my little girl to boarding school to get the services that she needs.  I don't think this school is going to be open much longer.  Technology is making it unnecessary as most hearing impaired children are able to be completely mainstreamed.  ASL is dying out as well which makes me sad, but it really is a good thing that these kiddos will be able to live a basically normal life.

We also drove right past the old mill village where they filmed the Hunger Games.  You can take a tour but we didn't get there soon enough.  They village sits right in the middle of a fairly main road and there is really no way to restrict access to it.  You can just drive or walk through.  We got there at dusk and it was kind of creepy!
