We decided it would be best for me to take Kaitlyn and for Jason to stay with Kinsey and finish up the car and close up the house and then meet us there later if necessary. Poor Kaitlyn did NOT want to go and as we drove to the ER she kept saying, "I don't want to see the doctor! I don't want to get a shot! I want to stay with Kinsey and Daddy!" She fell asleep right before I got to the ER which scared me, because she had hit her head and and I wasn't sure if she was supposed to be sleeping.
I got her loaded up in the stroller and went into the hospital. The first thing the lady at the check-in desk asked me was, "How are you doing tonight?" Seriously??? We got into triage (they also asked me how I was doing) and pretty quickly were in a room. Apparently a 3 year old with a head trauma moves you through the system pretty quickly. I was told it was okay for her to sleep but I kept poking her to make sure she was okay.
The doctor came into see her and wanted her awake. It took us almost a full minute to get her awake and somewhat alert. He did a full check on her and even got some giggles out of her. It was decided that she needed a CT scan so they could check for brain injuries and bone fractures.
Kaitlyn fell back asleep and ended up sleeping right through the CT scan, which was such a blessing because it meant we didn't have to sedate her. I waited for the results for awhile and was told that her brain was fine but she did fracture her nose. Poor Kaitlyn.
I took her home and put her to bed. I had to wake her up throughout the night just in case. She slept well and woke up at her normal time the next morning. She woke up and starting jabbering like usual. I asked her if she remembered what had happened and she said, "I fell in the trashcan!" I told her that she had broken her nose. She said, "I broke my nose?!" and then started to laugh. Later I showed her her face and she said, "Ouch!"
The break hasn't slowed her down a bit. The day after she fell I had to tell her, "Kaitlyn, don't climb on the couch. Kaitlyn, please don't jump down the stairs. Kaitlyn, we can't stand up on the teeter totter." Crazy girl. I think I am driving her nuts. I am so afraid that she is going to fall and hit her nose and that would hurt her so badly. Today and I told her to be careful (for the hundredth time) she put her hand over my mouth and said, "Don't listen to me." I think her point was, "Chill out mom! I'm fine!"
We are told her nose should heal just fine though her black eye should last about a month and go through constant color changes. We get all sorts of crazy comments and reactions when we take her places. She doesn't seem to care and tells people, "I fell in a trashcan! I broke my nose! Gerald broke his funk (trunk), piggie broke his nout (snout), and I broke my nose! Silly Kaitlyn! Daddy saved me!" (we just happened to read this book last week about breaking trunks/snouts)
We JUST signed Kaitlyn up for a gymnastics class. Today I went in to see if there was any way to get our money refunded. Kaitlyn has to wait 3-4 weeks before doing anything like that. I asked the lady what their policy was for refunds for medical reasons (they usually never refund your money) and she asked me what was going on. I told her that Kaitlyn had broken her nose. She looked at Kaitlyn and said, "Oh my goodness! Yes, we will give you a refund! That is the worst broken nose I have ever seen!"
All in all we are so grateful that the trashcan was there (though if there was no trashcan there, she probably wouldn't have been hanging over the side of the deck...) to break her fall. Had she kept going, instead of dropping into the trashcan, she would have landed head first on gravel and cement pavers. She's such a tough little girl and we are again grateful for the medical care we receive in this area, because goodness knows we need it with this little tornado running around!
