Ophthalmology- We haven't been to the ophthalmologist since Kaitlyn was about 7 months old. I've noticed that one of her eye's seems a little less than straight, so I brought some pictures with me to show the doctor. He said that Kaitlyn has what is called a positive angle kappa. Here is the best definition I found for it: a condition in which the alignment of the eyes is straight (also known as orthotropic); however, they appear to be turned outward. Confusing right? Basically, her eyes are straight, but one (the left) turns out a bit when she is looking at things in order for her to see things straight. It doesn't affect her vision, and needs no intervention. It is just a Kaitlyn-quirk. In fact, the doctor told me that most supermodels have positive angle kappa on both eyes, it's a feature that we subconsciously find attractive. No wonder everyone thinks Kaitlyn is so cute :) Anyways, her eyes show ZERO damage from CMV (CMV can scar the retinas causing blindness) and look totally healthy. The doctor doesn't need to see her again until she is 7.
Audiology- We did booth testing again. Kaitlyn did great! She sat all by herself and cooperated for a good amount of time (for a 2 year old). She still seems to be hearing well in her good ear. We go back in October.
Testing her hearing in "the booth"

Infectious Disease- Our ID doctor has been with us from the start. He got us through the disastrous valganciclovir treatment (remember the anemia/neutropenia issues? Blood transfusions? 5 shots at home EACH WEEK?). SO glad that is over. He's been following Kaitlyn for the past year, even though she is no longer on the medicine. He is absolutely amazed by her progress. We had a moment, when he was in the room checking her out, that both of just stood there, staring at her as she tried to climb on a chair. It's amazing to see how far she's come, and he's been through it with us from the start. He released her as well, but told me to call if I ever have any questions. It was almost bittersweet to be released, I'm SO glad she doesn't need his help anymore, but we'll miss meeting with him every so often. I thanked him prosperously before we left for all he had done, and Kaitlyn reached out to him and gave him a huge hug.
Very cooperatively getting her head measured in the hall. She is seriously the BEST patient. She's never scared of anyone. When the doctor came in she tried to climb up on the table so that he could examine her.

Dentist- Routine check-up. Kaitlyn did REALLY well and opened up with just a bit of coaxing and let the doctor look all around. He said her teeth look healthy and told me with certainty that her baby teeth were NOT affected by CMV (CMV can cause pretty significant damage to teeth-dumb virus). Her teeth are crooked, thanks to a binky and bottle (Update: as of Saturday, we are OFF the bottle-YAY!) but he said they will straighten up on their own and not to worry about it. We go back in six months.
NICU Follow-Up- This gets it's own post-stay tuned!
2 Year Check-Up- She also met with our general pediatrician for her 2-year check-up. He was also amazed by her progress. When he walked in the room, Kaitlyn ran over and gave him a huge hug. She's finally on the percentile chart for EVERYTHING (Yay-first time!) and is starting to gain some much needed weight. She is doing almost everything that a 2-year old should be doing. She got one little shot and only cried for a few seconds (until Kinsey gave her an M&M).
I should also mention-- Kinsey came along to 4 of the 6 appointments. She is such a trouper and really does a great job being dragged to all these places. She loves to jump into the conversations and tell the doctors everything that Kaitlyn is doing, show them her owies, and tell them that she will be turning 5 on "September 3rd first Saturday." I really love her.
Cute girls being cute

I am so glad to hear all the progress she is making. And she is lucky to have such a great sissy to help take care of her! She is such a strong little girl. I remember being so worried for her when she was a newborn, but look at her now! Sending hugs to all of you!
This makes me happy! I love your little girls. God bless.
